Covington Cathedral Exterior

Covington Cathedral Exterior

August 2018
Exterior Covington Cathedral

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky on two Sundays in August 2018. The Cathedral is one of 85 minor basilicas in the United States. “The Cathedral’s north transept window is the world’s largest church stained glass window, measuring 67 feet in length by 24 feet wide.” I highly recommend visiting in person to feel the impact of the structure. The light felt just right during these two shoots. The first Sunday, I shot on an overcast day. The light that cool day portrayed the solemnity of her stone and the longevity intended by her original craftsmen. But then I thought of Monet studying the Rouen. In order to truly observe this structure, I should come back another day. Would the color change? Would I imagine the original masons’ intent differently? In my mind, there was no way those windows were not built for the sun. The second Sunday, I was lucky enough to capture the same light meant for those incredible windows in the Cathedral’s exterior. Both days were moving, in their ways. What is your preference?
